Howell MI
A small town in Livingston County, Michigan. The population was 7,983 at the 2000 census, but the 2010 Census places it at 9,944. While Howell's growth is less explosive than that of other nearby counties like Oakland or Macomb, the town continues to be an excellent alternative for people who are looking for good schools and low home prices within commuting distance of major metropolitan areas.
Howell MI History
The area has long been part of the ancestral homeland of several tribes of Native Americans—including Potawatomie, Ottawa, Chippewa/Ojibwa and related bands—who occupied lands along the adjacent Detroit River before European settlement began after 1710. Most settlements were informal "French" trading posts. The first permanent settlement in what is now Livingston County was established by an American Revolutionary War veteran named Benjamin Woodruff at Grand River, about two miles south of present-day Howell, in 1790.
The Village of Howell was settled in 1833 and incorporated as a village in 1893. It has been mostly agrarian until the last few decades when growth exploded due to the presence of several major highways (I-96 and US 23) and increased business development as people commute across Southeast Michigan for work or recreation activities such as visiting Kensington Metropark, a popular park due to its central location on Lake St. Clair and accessibility via I-96 and I-696.
